What a wonderful old poem! When I first heard it, during the 1940a, I was in about 6dth or 7th grade at Dudley Grammar School in El Paso, Texas, with a very good, but very strict old English teacher named Mrs.Iverson (?). After having it read, she, of course, asked for an interpretation. No hands went up (naturally!), and I happened to be the unlucky one whose gaze she caught casting my eyes downward. At the time, I never would have guessed what she said the poem referred to -a person's body as it aged and finally just fell apart from age!
About 10 years ago (I am now approaching 79) I suddenly remembered the poem, and realized that I was very much akin to that shay!...and now, 10 years later, with just about every part of my body following the plight of the one-horse shay, I identify heavily with it--knowing that some day, my body will just totally disappear from overuse and age! However, as with the shay--it's been a good run!

Watching zombie movies, like reading the Bible, is really not for the faint of heart. Personally, I believe there are many movies in the horror and/or zombie genre, that are "redeemable." That is, there is a positive underlying message. Some refer to God, directly or indirectly. That being said, zombie movies are not for everyone. For example, they are not for children. And keep in mind that most every zombie movie contains these elements:

1. Excessive, over the top, gore
2. Lots and lots of cursing
3. nudity

You may consider these elements in your definition of "exploitive." If these elements disqualify a movie for your viewing, then my advice is to stick with another genre.

As far as recommendations (Not in any particular order): Night of the Living Dead, Day of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead (original, 1978), Dawn of the Dead (2004), 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later. Oh, there are so many. These are a few good ones that come to mind.

HOW gory is it? I'm looking for some scary/thrilling yet "redeemable" zombie movies (i.e. I Am Legend, NOTLD, etc). PG-13 (or R-light) are preferable. I highly value psychological horror but completely abhor gore-fests. So, are there any zombie-esque movies out there that don't include zombies feasting on people? I've always wanted to check out 28 Days Later but all the descriptions include tons of disturbing graphic violence.

I'm just looking for something thought provoking as opposed to something exploitative.

Any help you can throw my way would be greatly appreciated,

You know something this movie was not ment to have hope in it it was supposed to shock you and give you a straightforward message and make you grateful for the things you have, the things GOD provides and the things we take for Granted also notice that in the film near the beginning they walk over a cash register fulled with cash notice that they ignore it ( which realy does backup that money is not realy anything but paper which has "value" associated with it , anyway this was not meant to have a Biblical message it was a message to us .. The people on this Earth saying "Look what you're doing to yourselves" i give 5 stars to this really impressive movie oh and by the way go and read Ecclesiastes and how Death is better than the living and all.

Thanks for your comment. I've heard a number of interpretations for the meaning of The Deacon's Masterpiece; but not the exact one you propose. Although Jonathan Edwards was an influential preacher in the 18th Century revival movement commonly known as "The Great Awakening," I'm not sure I'd say he created it. Some would argue that God Himself, the Creator of the whole universe, created this revival movement as well.

Thankfully, revival and Christianity did not break apart, and stay broken, all at once, as did the famous one horse shay. There have been other significant revival movements in America since the "Great Awakening." America needs revival now. Please pray with me that revival will break out.

The Poem is actually a satire on the Religious Movement 'The Great Awakening' created by Jonathan Edwards. The Great Awakening was supposed to have no weak points. Unfortunately, like The Shay of Holmes's it fell apart and doesn't exist today

I believe you are incorrect in saying that Bill McCollum hates gays. I know you are correct in saying that Jesus Christ died for everyone.

Bill McCollum, apparently, professes to have christian faith, but, hates a group of people - gays. How does that work? I thought the christians say Jesus died for every one.
